Canadian Sepsis Foundation Achieves Charitable Status
MARKHAM, ON — The Canadian Sepsis Foundation (CSF) has been granted registered charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency. Effective June 16, 2026, the Foundation is a charitable organization under the Income Tax Act, and every donation is now eligible for an official charitable tax receipt.
The milestone comes at a critical time. Sepsis, the life-threatening disease in which the body's response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs, is the country's fourth leading cause of death and among its most avoidable.
Treating sepsis costs the Canadian health care system more than 2 billion dollars each year, and rates continue to rise even as diagnosis and treatment improve. Globally, an estimated 166 million people are affected annually.
Despite these numbers, public awareness of sepsis remains low. Many Canadians cannot name the warning signs, and survivors often face long recoveries with little support. Since its founding in 2017, the Canadian Sepsis Foundation has worked to close that gap, uniting survivors, families, critical care specialists, and researchers behind a simple message: Suspect Sepsis. Save Lives. Support Recovery.

Charitable registration strengthens the Foundation's capacity across each of its mission areas: educating Canadians about the risks, prevention, recognition, and treatment of sepsis; advocating for improvements in sepsis care; supporting survivors and their families; and championing sepsis research.
